Their Daddy, Ramesh Dev Sunar, started this home because he had experienced the hardships of being orphaned at a young age. He has taken more than 150 children under his wing and raised them as his own, fighting against all odds to provide them with a loving family and an education, while raising them as compassionate and independent people.
The children who currently reside with them range from ages 4 to 23. Some have already finished their education and have entered the working world but have chosen to stay at Mountain Home to help their younger siblings. They all have their own hopes and dreams – from being engineers and footballers to being dancers and baristas – but one thing they all have in common is that they are hard-working, kind-hearted children.
When I asked one of the boys whether he enjoyed school, he answered “Yes, but sometimes I am lazy.” I laughed and agreed. However, he continued by saying “Sometimes I don’t want to walk to school.” The “laziness” I thought we shared was completely different – my laziness involves failing to appreciate the value of my education whereas his “laziness” is physical exhaustion in having to walk long hours through a dangerous jungle to obtain his education.
