Become Mountain Home’s Hero

Nestled in the jungle of Dadagaun, Kathmandu, lies Mountain Children Home. It is a place of warmth, joy, and laughter, but life for the 32 children who live there is not easy.

They all came to Mountain Home at a young age when they lost both of their parents and no other relatives took them in. As soon as they stepped foot into Mountain Home though, they were no longer alone. But they still brave untold challenges:

  • Hour-long walks to school through a night-time jungle
  • A catastrophic earthquake that flattened their home
  • Constant food and financial insecurity…

Through all these burdens, they have kept their strength, joy and love.
We want to help Mountain Children Home to finally have the essentials they need: what their “Daddy and Mommy” – the home’s founders – have fought for for over 25 years. In particular, we want to give them the gifts of education and security.

Who They Are

Their Daddy, Ramesh Dev Sunar, started this home because he had experienced the hardships of being orphaned at a young age. He has taken more than 150 children under his wing and raised them as his own, fighting against all odds to provide them with a loving family and an education, while raising them as compassionate and independent people.

The children who currently reside with them range from ages 4 to 23. Some have already finished their education and have entered the working world but have chosen to stay at Mountain Home to help their younger siblings. They all have their own hopes and dreams – from being engineers and footballers to being dancers and baristas – but one thing they all have in common is that they are hard-working, kind-hearted children.

When I asked one of the boys whether he enjoyed school, he answered “Yes, but sometimes I am lazy.” I laughed and agreed. However, he continued by saying “Sometimes I don’t want to walk to school.” The “laziness” I thought we shared was completely different – my laziness involves failing to appreciate the value of my education whereas his “laziness” is physical exhaustion in having to walk long hours through a dangerous jungle to obtain his education.

Why They Need Your Help

The children receive no help from the Nepalese government and are completely reliant on the occasional donation to support a family of 35. They have no financial security and only very limited resources which leaves them extremely vulnerable in states of emergency. Last year, their water filtration system broke down which left them drinking unclean water.

These children understand a better education is essential for them to be independent and to stand on their own two feet. Therefore, they give their education their all. Recently, the younger children received their school test results – from kindergarten to grade 7, all the children at their school who came in first place were from Mountain Home.

This is no small feat, given all the odds stacked against them. With just a little help from you, they can unlock their full potential to achieve great things.

How You Can Help

01.

give monthly

Monthly donations will go towards their weekly English tutoring and their tutor’s travelling fees due to their remote location. English tutoring ensures that they can be self-sufficient when they are older thanks to their language skills.

Please check the box “Make this a recurring monthly donation” on the website.

02.

Make a One-Time Gift

Every dollar will go towards the 5 computers and webcams – ensuring that the children have secure access to the internet and all the educational resources online that are often taken for granted.

Goals

We are setting a starting goal of HKD 100 000, but we hope to exceed this initial target.

HKD 77 000:

A new English teacher: Traveling to-and-from Mountain Home is difficult, and the distance has stunted the learning opportunities of the children there. Despite only being taught a basic level of English – limited to introducing themselves and asking simple questions – they have been given textbooks in English for most subjects. Therefore, not receiving help to improve their English not only affects their English language, but their ability to learn and understand all subjects.

HKD 23 000

Five new computers, webcams and mics: These will allow the children and teenagers of Mountain Home to pursue their own education, opening up a new world of information and skills – including free online classes.

Who I am & April 2023 Update

I’m Emma. I visited Mountain Children Home in Nepal for the first time in August 2022. Due to my interest in videography and my desire to spread their story, I decided to film life at Mountain Home throughout my time there.

These children are not only my friends, but also my Nepalese family – they have taught me endless things and caused me to reflect on my own life and how I can become a better person. My feelings for them are not of sympathy, but rather, of immense admiration and respect. Despite the abandonment and instability they have experienced, they really have maintained the most positive outlook on life. My dream is to give them the tools and help they need in order to be independent in the future. I have donated the amount of school fees saved from my existing academic scholarship to them.

I recently went back in April 2023 to see them again and catch up. It was an extremely memorable experience again, with lots of smiles and laughter, especially when spending time with the younger kids. Thank you so much to all the donors who have very generously donated to this cause! We have found an English teacher for them, who is extremely passionate about not only improving their English, but also helping them develop as confident and kind people.

All of this could not have happened without your help — thank you.
